Message from Superintendent

The second decade of the 21st Century is drawing to an end. The dawn of the millennium has been marked with advances in technology that continue to grow at an exponential rate. We are living in an increasingly diverse, globalized and complex society that is re-shaping the way we live, the way we think, and the way we interact with our surroundings.

Today’s first graders will enter the work force in 2030s. We have no sure way of knowing how the world will look in the decades ahead, but schools are charged with preparing our students for life in that world. More than ever before, youngsters of the new generations are faced with unprecedented challenges such as global warming, diminished resources, poverty, diseases, global population explosion and other economical, environmental and social issues. These issues lead to a need for these youngsters to be able to negotiate, communicate, collaborate, and make changes personally and socially to meet the demands of the world of the future.

NCIC Immersion School recognizes the critical need for developing 21st century skills as captured by UNESCO in this key essence: learning to learn and innovate. We believe the authentic education addresses the “whole person” and does not limit the curriculum, program and learning to workplace readiness. As we put students in the center of learning, it impacts the way we design and build a school, how we organize curriculum, how we assess students, how we acquire and utilize resources and new technologies to prepare them for a world of constant changes. It means we, the school community as a whole, have to commit ourselves to the continued search for new and better ways to learn and to hold ourselves accountable for that commitment and learning.

As educators, we strive, in simple terms, to create a school in which the students, all of them, are so excited about school that they can hardly wait to be there. A school where there is little or no “discipline problems” not because students are afraid of the wraths of breaking the rules, but because they want to honor and protect their own learning space. A school where parents are calling, sending notes, or coming together to celebrate the dramatic changes they are witnessing in their children: newly found enthusiasm and excitement for school, a desire to work on projects, research, write or read after school and on weekends; not because they have to, but because they want to. A school where students will gain skills that will serve them for life, skills that will directly impact those around them. These students will make a difference in the future, and their collective capacity will change the world.
